Daily brushing is a no-brainer for removing plaque and tartar and keeping your smile healthy. Still, many look for other ways to go beyond regular dental care to make their smiles as white as possible. In fact, the market for products like whitening strips and specialty whitening products grossed over $6.9 billion in 2023.
However, did you know that the secret to a fresher, whiter smile may exist right in your refrigerator? While some associate food with making teeth dirty, some foods do the complete opposite—helping teeth and gums.
Here are five surprisingly effective (and delicious) ways to whiten your teeth. Remember: balance is key; while these natural tips complement regular dental care, they don’t replace it.
This tropical treat packs a bromelain punch. Bromelain is an enzyme that numerous studies have shown can help whisk away plaque and stains clinging to teeth. Just be sure to wait at least 30 minutes before brushing, as pineapple's acidity can temporarily soften enamel.
Who knew that sweet, delicious strawberries were stain fighters? They contain Malic acid, a natural astringent that gently dissolves surface stains. Much like pineapple, strawberries can temporarily soften enamel, as they contain citric acid. Try to avoid brushing for 30 minutes after snacking to ensure you don't brush away more than just dirt.
Crunchy apples do double duty for your teeth. Their fibrous texture acts like a natural toothbrush, scrubbing away plaque and bacteria. Plus, they also contain malic acid, aiding in stain removal.
Chewing apples also boosts saliva production. This can help rinse away food particles and neutralize mouth acid that can lead to staining.
Almonds, walnuts and sesame seeds act as natural scrubbers, buffing away surface stains with their abrasive texture. Sesame seeds in particular are superstars, boasting high calcium content to strengthen enamel and prevent future staining.
Also, the healthy fats found in nuts have been shown to have anti-inflammatory benefits for your gums!
Celery's fibrous texture acts like a tiny scrub brush, removing plaque and bacteria. Chewing celery also gets your saliva flowing, washing away food particles and neutralizing acids.
Bonus: celery is high in vitamin A, which is important for healthy tooth enamel.
While these natural wonders are a great addition to your routine, they shouldn't replace good old-fashioned brushing and flossing. Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste is essential for maintaining oral health and preventing cavities. Flossing daily removes food particles and plaque from between teeth, areas your toothbrush can't reach.
Remember: Even with these natural whiteners, moderation is key. Overdoing acidic fruits like pineapple and strawberries could erode enamel. Listen to your body and avoid any discomfort.
To ensure your teeth are healthy, it's recommended to visit a dental hygienist twice a year.
